Emergence of Autonomy in Contemporary Artificial Agents: Any Novelty?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The article by Arnellos, Spyrou and Darzentas discusses the question of whether an artificial system, such as a robot or artificial life, can be made genuinely autonomous. The negative answer that they present is sound, but seems to us to be a simple consequence of the definitions adopted. We argue that the theoretical considerations presented, based on the notions of functional emergence and meaning, need further explanation in order to give support for their argument. As it is presented so far, not very much novelty is added to the already existent research on autonomous and cognitive robotics and artificial life. Also, we would like to challenge the defenders of the “theory of self-referential systems” to set up conditions in which the theory would be considered falsified. The problem of whether life and autonomy could in principle be sustained with components other than carbonbased organic molecules seems to involve still unknown empirical aspects, and cannot be answered simply with theoretical considerations.

Emergence and Downward Causation in Contemporary Artificial Agents: Implications for their Autonomy and Some Design Guidelines
Contemporary research in artificial environments has marked the need for autonomy in artificial agents. Autonomy has many interpretations in terms of the field within which it is being used and analyzed, but the majority of the researchers in artificial environments are arguing in favor of a strong and life-like notion of autonomy. Departing from this point the main aim of this paper is to exam...
متن کاملAgent Cognitive capabilities and Orders of Emergence: critical thresholds relevant to the simulation of social behaviours
In this paper we provide a brief recount of alternative approaches to what we argue is a fundamental issue for our understanding of sociality – the micro-macro problem or, as we refer to it here, the problem of social emergence. We then discuss recent attempts to identify how the range and type of emergent phenomena changes as a result of changes in the fundamental characteristics of micro-agen...
متن کاملMultiagent Systems Without Agents - Mirror-Holons for the Compilation and Enactment of Communication Structures
It is widely accepted in Distributed Artificial Intelligence that a crucial property of artificial agents is their autonomy. Whereas agent autonomy enables features of agent-based applications like flexibility, robustness and emergence of novel solutions, autonomy might be also the reason for undesired or even chaotic agent behavior. As a conceptual approach to the solution for this “autonomy d...
متن کاملThe Emergence of Autonomous Representations in Artificial Agents
Representational autonomy is a key property of an artificial agent. The type of representational structures and the role they play in the preservation of an agent’s autonomy are pointed out. The limitations of the traditional cognitivist approach and of the embodied intelligent approach to support such representational structures are described and indicated. A framework of self-organising Peirc...
متن کاملOn artificial autonomy emergence — the foothills of a challenging climb
We set forth a case study using artificial agents ruled by abductive logic and emergent behavior, in order to investigate both the ability of these systems to reach some sense of autonomy relevant to moral philosophy, as well as to help to redefine this notion. Such agents exemplify what we could understand as the bottom of the hill of autonomy as an emergent property of some systems. We specif...
